In an attempt to reach beyond the normal comic book crowd, Dark Horse Comics unveiled at Comic-Con three new comics by three creators from the world of film, music and young adult literature that will hit shelves this fall.
THR’s COMPLETE COVERAGE: Comic-Con 2011
Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro, Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and author P.C. Cast will be spearheading comics series for the Oregon-based publisher.
“We want to reach people who don’t normally read comics,” said Dark Horse president Mike Richardson in front of a throng of fans packed inside the San Diego Convention Centre, the site of the San Diego’s Comic-Con International.

Del Toro, who was not present due to an injury, is overseeing the adaptation of his vampire novel series The Strain, co-written by Chuck Hogan.
Writer David Lapham (Stray Bullets) and artist Mike Huddleston (MK Ultra) are handling the actual comic but del Toro will be giving input every step of the way. The first arrives on sale on December 14.
Morello is writing Orchid, described as an “epic fantasy…tale of a 16-year-old street prostitute who learns that she is more than the role society has imposed upon her…Human settlements are now ringed by a dense wilderness from which ferocious new animal species prey on the helpless. The high ground belongs to the rich and powerful that overlook swampland shantytowns from their fortress-like cities. Iron-fisted rule ensures order and allows the wealthy to harvest the poor as slaves.”
Morello, greeted by loud cheers by those assembled, said he was an avid collector of comics as a kid but “as a teen, I put down comics and picked up a guitar.”
“I didn’t want to be another Hollywood jack-ass writing a screenplay and didn’t have time to write the great American novel,” he said, so he chose comics as his medium.
Morello is writing the book, which will have art by Scott Hepburn (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) and be on sale October 12.
A free song from his latest music project, unde the name “The Nightwwatchman,” will come with a copy of each issue.
Cast, and her daughter Kristin Cast, have developed legion of fans as the co-authors of House of Night, featuring high school-aged vampires. The comics will take place in between scenes of Betrayed, the second book of the best-selling series.
The comic will be co-written by Kent Dallan, with art by Joelle Jones (Troublemaker). It arrives in stores November 9.
